There was a dramatic increase in abject poverty after the North burned a lot of southern infrastructure, homes, and businesses whenever they enacted their "total war" policy. Reconstruction didn't help much to fix the damage done so the south found themselves in a situation where they couldn't lift themselves out of economically.
