I believe the answer is: they impede scientific progress
The scientific findings that derived from a research often would be used as a basis for other research in the future. This method allow our scientific development to keep moving forward.
When a research knowingly falsified data, the basis for future scientific research is already wrong to begin with and this would stunt the development.
