Calpurnia disciplines Scout for disgracing Walter, and Scout asks her father to fire her, but he does not. What does this show about Cal's role/status in the Finch family?

The fact that Atticus refuses to fire Calpurnia for disciplining Scout proves her importance in the Finch family.

Because Jem and Scout do not have a mother of their own, Calpurnia best fills that role. She teaches them right from wrong and helps Atticus raise them into good adults.

Therefore Calpurnia is more than an employee -- she is a member of the family.
