The weapon was very effective.
It was used by the Cuban Insurgents as it could be fired from reasonable distance and create a whole you could "drive a good-sized truck through it". Roosevelt's Rough Riders also used them. They soon became obsolete though as it was not really practical and easy to handle as it required a lot of time to be set properly.
