Gatsby wants Nick's grass cut before his meeting with Daisy. He sends people next door to Nick's house to cut his grass because he wants every part of his first time seeing Daisy to be perfect. He wants Nick's house to be more impressive than it is, and also is, in a way, thanking Nick for hosting the meeting.
