Why did saul lose the kingdom of Israel to David?

Saul fell on his sword (committing suicide) to avoid being captured in the battle against the Philistines at Mount Gilboa, during which three of his sons were killed. The succession to his throne was his only surviving son Ish-bosheth, and his son-in-law David.
