For Georgiana, Boston was the place of her youth. It was full of culture, excitement, and vitality.

The reader knows how important Boston is to Georgiana when, at the end of the story, she begins to weep at the thought of returning to Nebraska. There, Georgiana has none of the life or excitement that Boston offers.

When she was younger and living in Boston, Georgiana was a music teacher who enjoyed attending concerts, teaching students, and going out into the city. In Nebraska, she has only a small organ in her parlor, and there are no concerts to attend -- only life on the homestead.
