A policy of fear and propaganda through the 2nd Red Scare contained communistic ideology. In addition to immigration restrictions, communist ideology remained limited in the 1950s and 1960s. The biggest containment policy of the time period was led by Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy, for whom McCarthyism is named, was a junior senator who claimed to have a list of known communists working in the State Department spying on the US for the USSR. He used fear to lead a "witch hunt" causing many people to lose their jobs or become blacklisted. The fear of being blacklisted or living next to a communist kept communist ideology suppressed or contained through the 1950s and 1960s.

After WWII, the US adopted the containment strategy as the main approach in foreign policy. It aimed ot stop the spread of communism worldwide.

Propaganda programs served the abovementioned purpouse, and also the Marshall Plan. The Marshall Plan was an initiative launched by the US in 1948 to help the recovery of Western European countries after WWII. $ 12 billion were sent to rebuild those countries and to boost their economies by rebuilding factories, infrastructures, civil buildings, etc. After receiving the assistance, Western European powers sided with the US and acted as a barrier for containing communism, that has already suceeded on many Eastern nations of the European continent.
