If this question is in relation to the novel A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe, the answer would be seeing and hearing death all around. Due to the plague, people were literally collapsing in the streets, while their loved ones screamed in horror due to their loss. It was an environment of despair and tragedy.
