In the short story The Slip-Over Sweater, the main character Shan wants the sweater because the girl he's in love with, Jo-Anne, said he would look good if he had one.
The boys who have the sweater don't necessarily wear it themselves, but rather give it to the girls they like so that they can wear it. Jo-Anne, at the beginning of the story, is wearing Roy's sweater. Shan wants to buy one for her to wear but, since he has no money, he has to borrow some money from the bank.
He ends up having trouble to pay the money back and his best friend from childhood - and girl he used to be in love with -, Grace, helps him. Her kindness ends up rekindling Shan's love for her and overshadowing Jo-Anne.
