Augustus had Virgil compose The Aeneid to legitimatize his rule. In the story, Aeneas and his descendants would survive the battle and Troy and then go on to found Rome and create a great empire. Virgil hints at the idea that Augustus is the rightful ruler of Rome because he is a descendant of Aeneas.
