Red muscle fibers are red because they contain large amounts of RED BLOOD CELLS. Red blood cells carry a protein known as hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the oxygen carrying component of red blood cells. This substance is what gives blood its bright red color. Muscle cells will contain numerous red blood cells as these tissues require large amounts of oxygen to function efficiently.
