The waxy, transparent top layer of leaves is known as cuticle. It is a non-cellular protective covering found outside the epidermis of many plants. The cuticle functions by acting as a water permeability barrier that prevents excess water loss from the body of plants through evaporation. It also protects plant tissues by preventing the entry of microorganisms and external water.
