Which type of imperial rule allowed western governments to run the colony themselves

When the colonial holder ran the country themselves, this is called direct rule. Direct rule gave no political power to the native population and only foreign-appointed governors would run the colony. This is in contrary to indirect rule in which the colonial power would appoint members of the native population to govern over the colony.
