The history of farm support started with fertilizer subsidies, a vital agricultural input at a lowcost that was used to maintain soil fertility. Then, in 1981, the country experienced paymentproblems and turned to the World Bank and IMF for loans. Ever since, Malawi has been indebtedto and under the influence of the World Bank and IMF.
