When the top of the Earth is tilted towards the sun, it is summer in the northern hemisphere. Since the bottom half of the Earth (the southern hemisphere) is tilted away from the sun, it's winter there. On around June 21st, the northern hemisphere is at its max tilt towards the sun. This is called the summer solstice.
