There are a few point that are considered important in the wider construct of history, since Belgian (at least Flemish, since education is separated) history classes tend to focus on the whole of history, rather than Belgian history. This includes Belgian independence but unfortunately it also includes our colonial history and recent political history (and I feel that it shows in public discourse).
