The Indo-European language is thought to have originated around Azerbaijan and Iran.

With the name of Indo-European languages is known the largest family of languages in the world in number of speakers. The Indo-European family, to which most of the languages of Europe and South Asia belong, includes more than 150 languages spoken by around 3200 million people (approximately 45% of the world population), of which about 1200 million correspond to speakers of the Indo-Iranian languages and about 950 million speakers of the Romance languages.

The common ancestral language is known as Proto-Indo-European. There is disagreement about the geographical point where it originated. The main proposed sites are Southern Russia, Kurgan Oblast, South East Ukraine, Armenia or Iran.
