He published The Pioneers in 1823, the first of the five books that formed The Leatherstocking Tales. There he presented the first American hero, Natty Bumppo, alias Leatherstocking. The other novels included in this collection are: The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840), and The Deerslayer (1841). In these novels he created the first and finest detailed portrait of frontier life in American literature.
