Most people in academics say a rise in immigration during the early 20th century contributed to a resurgence of nativism among the American public. Some Americans believed their jobs and culture were in jeopardy, similar to other periods where nativism experienced popularity, and as a result saw those immigrating from other countries as adversaries.
