How can we solve linear equations in one variable

You would need to use the inverse operations.
For example, here is the equation 5x=50
You would need to divide 5 on both sides leaving x and 10
Therefore x would equal 10

here is an example:
x-5=3
x-5+5=3+5 => we add five on both sides
x=8
