Pudge is an American bulldog with a lot of personality. Like most American bulldogs, he has a rather square head with ears that seem somewhat on the small side for such a massive cranium. His ears are indicative of his mood.

Pudge has an impressive vocabulary for a dog, though clearly he gets frustrated when his family does not understand him. His “give me food right now and no one gets hurt” bark, however, is unmistakable. Occasionally he displays an understanding on par with at least the average high school senior, especially if the language in question involves eating poultry or going for a walk.

Pudge does not like to deviate from his routine. As soon as anyone gets up, he gets up, too, and utters his feed-me bark. Once he eats, he has to go outside and patrol the backyard.

Which sentence is the best addition for the end of Paragraph 3, based on meaning and style?

When the backyard has been secured, he comes back inside and settles down for a solid nap.

When the residence's exterior is deemed safe, the canine reenters the domicile and becomes somnolent.
When done, he heads in to sleep.

When the doggy is tired, he comes back in to snooze.

Final answer:

The most appropriate sentence to end Paragraph 3 is 'When the backyard has been secured, he comes back inside and settles down for a solid nap.' as it maintains the story's consistent and readable style for a middle school audience.

Step-by-step explanation:

When adding a sentence that complements the existing paragraphs in meaning and style, it is important to maintain both the consistency of the narrative and the readability for the audience's level of understanding. In this context, with the description of Pudge's routine and personality, the sentence that fits best stylistically and maintains the story's flow would be the following:

When the backyard has been secured, he comes back inside and settles down for a solid nap.

This choice reflects the casual yet descriptive storytelling technique used throughout the piece, effectively conveying Pudge's actions without altering the established tone or complexity.
