France, when held under the Ancient Regime which occured prior to the French Revolution, believed in the estate system. This system meant that they divided their population up into three different groups, or estates. The first estate was the clergy, the second estate was the nobility and the third estate were the commoners. The king was not a part of any estate, but simply just the king.
