Why was the Trojans' rejoicing premature

When the Greeks appeared to board their ships and sail home the Trojans believed that the war was over and that the giant horse left on the shore was a gift to them conceding defeat and thanking them for a war well-fought. In reality, the Greeks were waiting out at sea for the command to return and many heroes were hidden inside the horse ready to be let into the city and attack.
