What happened when the union shut down confederate ports?

In reference to the Civil War?

The ports where initially shut down to prevent the export of cotton and smuggling of war supplies into the Confederacy. The obstruction was an important economic policy that successfully barred Confederate access to weapons that the industrialized North could produce for itself.
