Why does the first amendment matter today

Freedom of speech and Religion. It says I can say what I want and believe in what I want. Even in ghost. If someone believes in something there is no law saying they can't. They can say anything that dosen't offend another human being. We can say whats on our mind without being told to shut up in public

The amendment matters, because it gives the people to have a voice and use it. It also gives us the right of other things such as peaceful assembly/ protest.
