Approximately when did cognitive psychology free itself from the death grip of behaviorism and begin to make more rapid progress?

During the mid 1950s, behavioral psychology became less popular and cognitive psychology made rapid progress as a field. This shift occurred due to  limitations in the behaviorism approach- mainly that it focused solely on external behavior rather than internal processes such as thoughts, language, memory and perception.
