one of the effects was the British smuggled a ton of amount of Opium into China and got a lot of Chinese population addicted to Opium.
The British did this intentionally in order to reduce Chinese' average human capabilities.This raged the emperor of China to the point where he declared a war against the British army, and this known as the opium war
