Between the G1 and the G2 phase, the cell undergoes a DNA replication. After the DNA molecule is replicated, there are two times more molecules than at the beginning. So, a cell that has 6 chromosomes, at the G2 stage would still have 6 chromosomes, but it would have twice as many DNA molecules- 12.
