A republic is a form of government characterized by a state that rules by representatives of the citizen body.

This means individuals having a relationship with that state, in this relationship citizens owe alliegiance in exchange of protection. One important characteristic of a republic, is it's capacity to govern itself by having the supreme power, this is known as sovereignity. Sovereignity rests within the people, trough elections they choose representatives that promote their interests.
