The North had many wealthy business men who knew how to invest money. The southerners relied on the cotton business too much and by the time they realized that the cotton industry was going out of business it was too late for them to start rapid industrialization. The north had Businessmen who understood this and opened towards new technologies and new factories and similar things which led to fast industrialization.
