One major precaution that would be encountered in the medical office is avoiding contact with patients' bodily fluids, usually by wearing personal protective equipment, which comprises if such nonporous articles as medical gloves, goggles, and face shields. This is because all patients are considered to be possible carriers of blood-borne pathogens.

Universal precautions in medicine are standards to avoid contact with a clients bodily fluids. The most common of these practices include wearing medical gloves for an entire exam, protecting the eyes with goggles if it is believed that liquids will be spurting, and to use face shields to prevent liquids from coming into contact with the face.
