Potential energy is the stored energy in an object due of its position or its configuration where as Kinetic energy is the energy which a body possesses because of its motion.

Potential energy is stored energy in something. For example, when a roller coaster is very high up on the track, it has a lot of potential energy before it goes down the track and continues going.

Kinetic energy is energy in motion. When the roller coaster goes down the track, that potential energy gets turned into kinetic energy.
