Following the Reformation in the 16th century -- which also coincided with voyages of discovery that found sea routes to Asia as well as a whole new hemisphere in the Americas -- Spanish missionaries traveled where the Spanish traveled.  The New World in the Americas, where Spain initiated colonies, was a huge new territory for mission work.  Also, Francis Xavier of the Jesuit order traveled to India, Japan, and elsewhere in Asia -- though mainly in Portuguese empire territory.
