The autonomous part of the nervous system controls the involuntary actions like breathing, the heartbeat, the workings of the digestive system etc.
The autonomic nervous system is made out of two parts, the sympathetic part that is usually responsive to stressful events and elevates bodily functions, and the parasympathetic part that has an opposite role.
