Because during that time it was legal to mistreat a color person and pay for a slave and how much time they would need to keep it or sale it but sometimes slave had the freedom of being set free cause of I believe once the owner buys the slave he or she puts the amount of time the slave will be held until release of freedom... because slavery was demeaning to a group of people, it was considered evil because they killed, mistreated, and stole from African Americans and there was nothing that could be done legally because it was legal.
