Southern populism originated in the idea that the Democrats didn't do anything useful for the south after the civil war and that the people were living dreadfully. The populists decided to no longer support them and to fight for their lives and their farms instead of just supporting democrats who were old civil war veterans who didn't really care about the people in the South.
