The correct answer is Sigmund Freud put forth the idea that an adult belief in a god or gods is the product of the adult's projection of powerful and long-lasting childhood experiences with his or her parents.

Freud theorized that belief in a god or gods is essentially a product of our childhood desire to be loved, protected and provided for our parents. This desire survives into adulthood and a deity becomes our parental substitute. We can get love, affection, support, needs etc. from a deity that we might not have got from our parents.
