y = x + 1.6 (1)

The total miles for the week is 19 miles, therefore
2.2 + x + 3.8 + y + 5.4 = 19
x + y + 11.4 = 19
x + y = 7.6 (2)

Substitute equation (1) into equation (2).
x + (x + 1.6) = 7.6
2x + 1.6 = 7.6
2x = 6
x = 3

From (1), obtain
y = x + 1.6 = 3 + 1.6 = 4.6
