Dreams aren't acted out during REM because REM in fact induces a state of paralysis of the skeletal muscles. Researchers studying this phenomenon have recently attributed the causality of this phenomenon to the release of the neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid and glycine during REM sleep.
