Wilhelm Wundt's Principles of Physiological Psychology and the American Psychological Association's original constitution both placed heavy emphasis on the "new psychology." The new psychology that Wundt was mostly responsible for developing was the psychology of laboratory experiments. In 1879 he opened the first laboratory specifically founded to perform psychological research.
