Why did the United States accept many German Jews as it might have

At the time, the United States had many fears as the war loomed on and took over the globe. The United States government decided to accept a smaller number of Jewish immigrants than it could have handled because there was a fear of enemy agents sneaking in, there were antisemitism problems in the US, there was still a bit of depression, and a lack of jobs for that many people.
