The skeletal muscles certainly help to maintain posture by supporting the skeleton and organs, they provide force for physical movement by driving extension and contraction of limbs and other body parts, and they help to regulate body temperature through their metabolic processes. They do not, however, directly protect the body from assault by pathogens.
