how can variations of traits in a population help in the adaptation of the population of its environment?

various traits allow for the fittest to survive. for example, if there was a population in a really cold environment, and the animals had various traits such as hair and no hair, then the animals with hair would most likely survive and pass those traits to their kids. then the next generation of animals would be better adapted to their environment because they have the traits to survive and thrive in their environment
