The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was a law enacted to prohibit Chinese laborers, skilled and unskilled laborers, from immigrating to the United States. As a result, the number of Chinese immigrants in the United States significantly decreased and the Chinese population decreased by almost half in 40 years.
The exclusion was mainly prompted for years of racial hostility and American stereotyping of the Chinese as degraded, exotic, dangerous, and competitors for jobs and wages.
