One of the primary reasons why the Americans decided to separate with the British would be the "taxation without representation". This meant that the American were paying huge amounts of taxes with out any say on where this taxes may go, or without becoming a recognized entity that could govern their own.

Because Colonists wanted each colony to have more power as a state over their ability to collect taxes and raise their own armies.
The British do not want the colonists to possess this because they feared that giving colonists army and lex taxes could make them grow into a powerful enough nation that could override them, but all this fear only ending up in irony.
