President Coolidge's decision was in order to try and reverse the statism trends that took hold in the American politics. President Harding also did this. The belief that government should control either social or economic policies, even both of these policies, is what is known as statism. De-regulation and incentives to the private sector was Coolidge's way of fighting this trend.
