The answer is step 2.

Sedimentary rocks are NOT heated. They form from the accumulated weathered materials. These weathered materials accumulate in the form of sediments (hence the name.) They go through the process of lithification, which is also known as compaction and cementation. This process is prompted by pressure, not heat.
