Survival was difficult in the great plains, both for white settlers and for Native Americans. Natives were constantly moving westwards towards Oregon in a difficult journey where many died due to diseases or fighting. For the white settlers, it was difficult because they lived in fear of Native Americans who didn't want to move and rebelled against it and sometimes attacked the settlers. This was happening on a daily basis.
