Travis Hirschi believed that delinquent behavior most often occurs when people lack social bonds. Whether they want to admit it or not, most people care about what others think of them. This means that they will often try to conform to what is expected of them by others. When social bonds are lacking, deviant behavior often follows.

Hirschi, a sociologist and social control theorist, believes that delinquent behavior tends to occur when people lack social bonds.

Hirschi claimed that individuals are more likely to commit crime and deviance when their attachment to society and its members are weakened. When individuals feel disconnected from society, they are less likely to uphold its values and norms, and therefore, more likely to engage in criminal and deviant behavior.
